The Cornell Nordic Ski Team has been around for many years at Cornell, and actually
started out as a varsity team back in the seventies (or earlier?). Long ago it changed
to a club sport and has been a student-run, college-assisted organization. We are
primarily skiers from the northeast but have included people from almost every state
that has snow and a few from states that don't have snow :)
The team is almost entirely optional. Members are not required to come to any practice
or even any race. We're focused on skiing and having fun, not on forcing you to
get in to shape.
The only thing that we'll ever ask of you is that you help out with our fundraisers.
We usually do a couple different fundraisers, cleaning up stadiums and parking cars
and whatnot, and we need some help for those. All active members are required to
do at least one fundraiser each year. Also, we collect some small dues from people
who go to ski camp and race all season, to help pay for food and lodging. Dues usually range from $50-$100 for six weekends of racing with food and lodging while ski camp is a little over $200 for a week of skiing(this year at Mont-Saine-Anne in Canada) as well as lodging, food, and transportation.
Our actual ski training is divided into the fall and spring semesters. In the fall,
we start practicing on weekdays in mid-September. As there's no snow, we do a flexible mix of running, rollerskiing,
and some strength work. These practices vary in intensity on a daily basis but we
never do anything terribly hard.
During the spring semester we race every weekend for the first six weeks, and practice
Monday-Thursday during the week. For on-snow practice, we ski at either Glen Swan's trails(a local bike-shop owner who maintains some pretty nice ski trails around his home) Greek Peak Nordic ($5/person until we've reached our quota) or Hammond Hill using member's
cars. If there's no snow, we do our best to find some. Winter practices are a bit
more structured but still primarily emphasize getting on snow as often and as long
as possible.
At the end of the race season we try to send a team of people to USCSA nationals.
Depending on what side of the country this is on it is either a trivial or difficult
task, but we usually manage. After the season is over we have an awards banquet
where everyone gets dumb/funny awards for their hijinks during the season and that
pretty much ends the official activities of the team. We still go running and biking
together in the spring because, after all those friday and saturday nights in hotel
rooms we're pretty good friends :)
This year, the team is coached and organized by
Brian Macpherson, Beth Esponnette, and
Patrick Nadeau.
Our faculty advisor, Dan Karig, is also a fountain
of skiing knowledge and a great contributor to team organization and practice. The
men and women do all workouts together and travel to races together as well.
